Anne of Green Gables is a 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (published as L. M. Montgomery). Written for all ages, it has been considered a classic children's novel since the mid-20th century. Set in the late 19th century, the novel recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl, who is mistakenly sent to two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Stunning descriptions of nature and extraordinary picture of life before the “great” wars. Surprisingly prescient and relevant. Glad to have read it as an adult as I think I may have only perceived it as moralising when I was a kid.
My mother was a teenager when she gave birth to me. She read this book while she was pregnant and, when I was born, she named me after the protagonist. Anne with an "E". I first read this book when I was nine years old, sitting in a car during a rainstorm. I started in the morning and finished just as it was getting dark and my mother called me inside. I've read it many times since, along with the entire series. It gave me a safe world to live in. I love them all.
