"The tale of Kvothe, from his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, to years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime-riddled city, to his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a difficult and dangerous school of magic. In these pages, you will come to know Kvothe as a notorious magician, an accomplished thief, a masterful musician, and an infamous assassin. But this book is so much more, for the story it tells reveals the truth behind Kvothe's legend"--From publisher description.

I will admit that the writing is pretty good. Every word is chosen wisely and the writing is cohesive. However, a quite interesting story is overshadowed by the most boring plot ever read in a fantasy book. People read fantasy books, because they want smth supernatural, beyond reality and typical human flaws. Here, the character is simple very intelligent. Not the chosen one. Kvothe does not fight any powerful evil character. Also, no action at all. Some harry potter tricks every now and then. This book ends up with a lot of romance and a small piece of fantasy. I am just wondering how it is so overrated. Maybe it is a nice story for teen girls who liked petty, teen magician stories. But surely not an impressive debut, especially in this genre.

Good book. One of the better stories I've read in a while. Suffers from being the first major work of the author. Reminds me of someone putting his GURPS character into a novel. I would recommend the book to anyone who enjoys Fantasy or Sci-fi. I look forward to see what he is writing a decade from now
