Sonya reviewed The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan (The Wheel of Time, #1)
No Middle Earth, Only Middling
3 stars
I’m now two books deep into The Wheel of Time, and the vibes are ‘meh’. Everyone says this is one of the greatest fantasy series of all time, up there with ASoIaF, which I loved, and LotR, which I enjoyed upon reappraisal, but there is nothing in Jordan’s world that is grabbing me. Not that I disliked it, it’s just very mid (and highly derivative of Tolkien at its worst).
I started this series after watching the TV adaptation, and at the risk of offending the internet, it was better. The changes they made were largely an improvement, and it was to Perrin’s character in particular that I was drawn in, so I was disappointed that he, and everyone else, turned out to be pretty bland and one-dimensional in the book.
